Trailer Review: Django Unchained (2012)

Quentin Tarantino tackles a new genre in his latest film; he’s done crime, martial arts, war, grindhouse, and now it’s the western; and here are my thoughts on the first trailer for his film, Django Unchained.

Initially the trailer doesn’t excite; it’s mostly shots of Jamie Foxx doing his usual mean and moody face and Christoph Waltz delivers some typically ‘cool’ Tarantino dialogue but he will have to be at the top of his game to match his performance in Inglorious Bastards. There are two nice 70’s style zooms (Waltz’s gun and DiCaprio’s face) but aside from this the footage doesn’t thrill. Take away the James Brown soundtrack (yet another use of a modern song being used in a genre piece – bored now) which kicks in to say ‘Hey, it’s Tarantino and it’s going to be fun!’ and the footage is pretty unspectacular.

I wanted to see much more Leonardo DiCaprio and he’s the main reason my interest in Django Unchained remains fairly high – but we’ll have to wait for the next trailer to see more of the A-List star who can do no wrong.

As trailers go, it’s by no means uninviting, but the name Tarantino alone just doesn’t sell me like it used to.
